Hamilton Spectator Coverage of Cool Fool Book Launch / August 17, 2010

It was a raucous night of music and memory at the book launch for Doug Carter’s new memoir, Cool Fool. Carter, an accomplished artist and printmaker in Hamilton, started his career as a bass player, lining up over the years with some of the city’s greats — The Chessmen (with Richard Newell, a.k.a. King Biscuit Boy); Guitar Mikey & The Real Thing; Messenger; and The Breeze, to name a few.

Cool Fool, subtitled Blues Rockin’ in The Hammer, takes a rollicking ride through the Hamilton music scene from the ’60s on, with memory trips to some of the great and not-so-great bars and venues, such as Kilroy’s, Kenilworth House, The International.

The Artword Artbar was filled with both writer and music types who came out to hear readings, including a scintillating one by Slim Volumes (Kerry Schooley), and some choice live music by Eddies Club Blues (Ron Copple and Ian Linton). Guitar Mikey (Mike McMillan) came all the way up from Clarksdale, Miss., legendary blues crossroads. John LaRocca (The Stingrays) and Paul Cronkwright (The Chessmen) were also there.

The book, published by Seraphin Editions, grew out of Carter’s blog, Cool Fool, Blues Rockin’ The Hammer.

He has also put together a terrific show of drawings and prints, evoking Hamilton’s music scene, that is being shown in the Artword Gallery portion of the Artword Arbar.
